Executive Summary
April 23, 1999
The average performance of seven Extended Year Schools (EYOS) was compared to the average performance of 82 TUSD schools operating on a traditional school year calendar. The seven EYOS schools included six elementary schools, Hollinger, Keen, Lawrence, Mission View, Pueblo Gardens and Rose and only one middle school, Wakefield. The 82 comparison schools included 64 elementary schools and 18 middle schools. The comparison schools did not include alternative education schools or schools lacking achievement test data. The two achievement tests used in the comparison were the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Stanford 9. The ITBS was administered the first two years of the comparison (1994-96) and the Stanford 9 was administer the last two years of the comparison (1996-98).
The two groups of schools were compared on the Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Language components of the ITBS and Stanford 9 as well as the overall battery scores of both tests. In all comparisons the comparison schools significantly outperformed the EYOS schools. In general, the gap between EYOS and comparison schools tended to either widen or stay the same from 1994 to 1996 on the ITBS. On the other hand, the gap between EYOS schools either narrowed or stayed the same from 1996 to 1998 on the Stanford 9. The following two pages show both the graphic representations of the longitudinal comparisons as well as the actual numeric values for both groups across years.
